According to the Randstad Risesmart 2023 Global Severance Research Report, it is crucial for organisations to focus on treating employees with extreme care, especially during periods of downsizing. Despite positive perceptions amongst HR and procurement professionals regarding downsizing actions, studies reveal severe negative impacts on remaining employees and the organisation’s brand. Redundancies, particularly those attributed to AI and automation, are highly sensitive and likely to elicit negative reactions.

Research from the American Psychological Association shows that being made redundant ranked as one of the most stressful life experiences, surpassing divorce, or the death of a close friend. Leadership IQ’s research indicates that after a single round of redundancies, 87% of remaining employees are less likely to recommend their organisation as a great place to work, 74% experience a decline in productivity, and 61% perceive their company’s prospects as worse.

Therefore, organisations must prioritise:
